History

From a Medieval Fortress to the Sunstar Hotel

The walls of this exquisite boutique hotel, once known as Palazzo Ivaldi, tell stories stretching back centuries. What remains from those early days are parts of a 10th-century castle complex, upon whose foundations the present estate was built around 1740.

Today, the former manor house stands proudly above the picturesque hills of Monferrato as a refined retreat for gourmets and those seeking tranquility. The historic charm of the 17th century blends seamlessly with modern luxury, lending the property a timeless elegance.

The history of the house is closely intertwined with the development of the municipality of Isola d’Asti. The name “Isola” recalls the original settlement on an island in the Tanaro River, before residents moved to the surrounding hills for protection against attacks.

The Sunstar Hotel Piemont—then known as “Castello di Villa”—has its roots in the 10th century. For more than 400 years, from 1409 to 1805, the powerful Natta family ruled the territory. Remains of the Romanesque towers still bear witness to this era.

» What walls endure tells more than words. «

After changing hands several times, the estate came into the possession of the Ivaldi family at the beginning of the 20th century, who had already transformed the castle into an elegant palazzo around 1740. In 1998, the historic villa was carefully renovated and sensitively converted into a charming boutique hotel.

Since 2010, the hotel has proudly been part of the Sunstar Swiss Hotel Collection, offering discerning travelers an authentic gateway to the culture and cuisine of Piemont.
